Personal Kanban

How do you keep track of your personal task list? Do you use MS Outlook’s standard task manager? Or maybe you use a tablet? A spreadsheet? Or just a good old-fashioned pen and pad?

Even at home I’ve been known to roll out the post-it notes for a project (my 4-year old loved moving them across as we completed tasks to turn my study into a playroom). But for day-to-day tasks, where I’m constantly on the move even when I’m in the office, that’s just not practical. I’ve tried a few apps before, but none has delivered what I needed. That is until I found LeanKit.

I think the Tennessee-based firm might just have created what I need. Using the desktop version, I found the new board easy to set up and intuitive. Before long I had not only created a board with the columns I needed but I’d set my own story types and transferred my to-do list over. Then, after a quick download, I had the app on my iPhone and could access my board at any time – synchronised of course.

There are a few aspects that I’d like to see made (for example, it’s not easy to order tickets within a column) but on the whole it is delivering. Now I have my work and personal tasks all in one place, can easily update their status, as well as see my backlog and done/closed tasks.

I doubt my daughter will like it as much though; nothing beats a physical post-it note. Maybe someone could work on a virtual reality version so it feels like you’re moving tickets?

I’m sure there is other software out there to compete. Feel free to let me know in the comments.

    1. I am satisfied with the basic (free) version of LeanKit although I’ve not taken a look at the reports yet. Not sure that the blocked/priority flags are differentiated enough so I have set up an urgent story type rather than use the urgent flag. Like having it on desktop, iPad and iPhone.
